I don't want to hear how many miles the owner travels to get his stock or how much he paid for something and how much he spent to fix it . Helllllloooo? I'm there to buy and not listen to your troubles and whining!!!
Wow! There are some really nasty people commenting here, and I could not DISAGREE with them more. Some of the more thoughtful reviewers have nailed it. John is a gentleman, the store is fantastic, the prices ranged from outrageously low to "fair to midland", but I saw nothing overpriced. It was not bargain basement, garage sale pricing in most cases, but it was in some, and it was fair throughout. O grew i[ om the area and our vacation home is a few miles away, and I can only say I'm sorry it has taken me this long to find it! It will be a regular stop from here on. I'm hesitant to post this, because I don't want to spoil the secret, but couldn't resist after seeing some of the scathing reviews...
This place is nothing short of amazing, a huge range of items, from pricey antiques, to practical old household items, beautiful furniture, and everything in between. The owners have always been incredibly friendly to me, and take great care in presenting the antiques. Worth a visit just to look around, as it is an old Masonic Temple, so the building itself is beautiful. Don't listen to the haters, this place is great!
The most beautiful things you ever seen all in one very large building. The prices are reasonable. If you are looking for restoration pieces take a ride short ride to Bethlehem, NH on Main Street. The are quite a few. One in particular is a barn with cheap prices.
I have been collecting Modern (from Deco to Post-modern) since Expo 67, where I was first introduced to Scandinavian Modern design in all its glories. John's antique store is a hidden treasure of Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, the Aesthetic Movement, Deco, Danish Modern and Mid-century American Modern. His prices are so ridiculously low as to make me embarrassed. He is always willing to negotiate unless he is losing his shirt. It is not that he doesn't know his stuff. He knows it very well. It's just that he lives in the Northeast Kingdom, and he is not on 1stdibs. He runs this enormous 3-storey high converted Masonic Building like an old fashioned antique store. And you cannot view it all in less than two days.
John is a very rare specimen: an honest antique dealer who loves to collect. He knows the origin of each piece in this department store, and why he admired it and bought it. His collections are vast and luminous. He understands those of us who, like him, have a passion (many consider a madness) for collecting a certain era or specific pieces. His associates are always welcoming and very helpful. His store is a joy!
